In 2022, the Guild is partnering with Calico Makers Market to launch a new Emerging Artists Program for High School visual arts students in Chatham and Orange counties. This exciting art education opportunity is jointly coordinated by Cally Curtis and Heather Washburn. Both are professional visual artists in fine art. Cally is a member of the Chatham Artists Guild and Heather is a member of Orange County Artists Guild and founder/owner of Calico Makers Market.
The programwill provide aspiring artists hands-on experience in working with the public to market, display, and sell artwork , as most professional artists must do. The program culminates with a free space in the juried Emerging Artists Booth at Calico’s 2022
Fall Makers Market.
The program pairs each student with a professional CAG artist who serves as a mentor throughout the process. Students volunteer 10 service hours—5 with the Guild and 5 at the 2022 Spring Calico Makers Market in April. Hours can include working with CAG artists in the Calico Art Activities Tent, helping vendors at the market, and in a myriad of other ways. When participants complete the service requirement, they are then eligible for a spot in the juried Emerging Artists Booth at the Fall Calico Maker’s Market the first weekend in October.
