“I was chatting with my friend just before church,” Kathy reflects. “She was contemplating doing something different and interesting and I was excited by the idea.” The something different and interesting turned out to be painting classes given by Chatham Artists Guild member Kathy Flood, who lived nearby. The two friends attended watercolor classes and “I was hooked,” Millikan exclaims. “I just wanted to paint paint paint.”

Kathy paints a variety of subjects – people, still life, pets, and other critters. “I most love to paint portraits,” she notes. “I am excited by capturing the individuality of expression and experience in people’s faces.” This special interest likely results from her early family experiences “I was six of seven children,” she explains. I got good at reading faces and figuring out my place in the family – my place in the world.”
Millikan’s journey to art and The Chatham Artists Guild has been circuitous. She attended UNC where she met her husband the first week of classes. She worked as a nurse and then returned to earn a law degree. She worked as an attorney for several years and then in 2009 she and her husband formed a new home care company, Aegis Home Care, with offices in the Triangle and Southern Pines, and shortly after, added services for geriatric care management with Aegis Care Advisors, PLLC.

With such a busy life, “I paint just because I love It, “Millikan emphasizes. She enjoys getting commissions for portraits of people and pets. Her paintings sell from $100 to $500 for 5×7 to 16×20 works. Her paintings can be viewed on her website and at the 2021 Chatham Studio Tour the first two weekends in December. She welcomes visitors to her studio throughout the year by appointment.
“I hope that people will feel the joy in my art that I experience in creating it, Kathy stresses.
