David Hoffman, a successful oceanfront condominium developer and marketer, sold his businesses and retired at age 50. He is a philanthropist and social activist who has initiated human rights campaigns and founded two active non-profits. David studied theatre arts at the University of Miami and filmmaking at USC in the 1970s. He was in his mid-sixties when he began his visual arts journey and has since painted more than 100 paintings. He was recently admitted to the Chatham Artists Guild. Remarking about his painting, ‘Death Star’, one of the jurors was quoted as saying: “Wow! Jackson Pollock meets Mark Rothko.” Purchases of David’s work are made through contributions to one of his two 501(c)3 non-profits, generating tax deductions for acquiring collectors.

Artist’s Statement: I consider myself an abstract expressionist and love finding new ways to evoke emotion. I work primarily in acrylics, experimenting with a wide array of media for texture. I am obsessed with color and the way variations connect and blend. I’m intrigued by the works of Wassily Kandinsky — his vibrant use of color and his evolution as an artist over time. I’m also fascinated with the works of Sonia Delaunay, Helen Frankenthaler, Juan Gris, Mark Rothko, and Jackson Pollock. I feel a kind of mindfulness and freedom when creating my art in solitude and silence.

“Do the thing, and you’ll have the power.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

I would love to convey, especially to young people, the truth of this maxim. Nothing happens until you act. Be bold and create. You will be surprised at the talent wrapped within!
