Mark Hewitt makes exquisite, wheel thrown, functional and decorative pottery in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Originally from “The Potteries” area of England, Mark set up his pottery studio in Pittsboro, NC in 1983. His mugs, plates, bowls, tumblers, teapots, pitchers, jars, planters and large platters are a delight to use and make every day more enjoyable. His elegant vases, from sweet bud vases to large table top vases are lovely with or without a bouquet of flowers.
Mark has traveled to five continents to study pottery making, and his work reflects the expanse of those influences. Mark is internationally known for his signature, massive “Big Pots” ~ large garden planters, and life-size jars, sentinels & vases that grace private homes, museums, public buildings, corporate offices and public and private gardens. They have a beauty and a presence that reflects Mark’s decades of dedication to his craft.
The pottery consists of an old renovated chicken house turned into a workshop, a large hay barn that serves as the gallery/showroom, large kilns – some big enough to walk inside, and the Hewitt’s home, all surrounded by pastures and a pond. Twice a year they host a Kiln Opening – two or three weekends when the pottery is open to the public to shop and tour. The December Kiln Opening is also on the Chatham Studio Tour. Visitors are welcome year round, but need to make an appointment to make such someone is available to help you!
