My organic ceramic sculptures, some functional, some decorative, are constructed by hand. Working with stained stoneware and porcelain clays, all my pieces are playfully formed from slabs, coils, and a large sense of humor. The clay is rolled, torn, textured, and refined quickly. Frequently, my ceramics are unglazed, or partially glazed, preserving the texture and appearance of raw clay.
All of my work is primarily influenced by experiences with and responses to the natural world with its patterns and shapes, shadows and reflections, textures and colors, beauty and decay.
Working across the multiple mediums of painting, photography, and ceramics, my artistic approach can lean toward simple, stripped-down images or complex layers of color, shapes and textures. Most of all, I value the freedom of process embedded in each medium which allows a whimsical unpredictability to each piece.
