Painting with watercolor– the destination I didn’t know I was seeking.
I have dabbled most of my life in many forms of crafting, delighting in the creative process and the thrill of seeing elements combine and morph into finished results. But once I turned to painting after being asked to join a friend in taking a watercolor class, the experience of nudging pigments to mix with water onto paper was almost romantic in a sense– and the creative part of my heart was taken.
Although I enjoy painting any kind of subject in watercolor, I find nothing more exciting than calling up the essence of a person in portraiture. Who knew that the application of a slight bit more burnt sienna could add value and depth to the contours of a face or the corner of the mouth and transform the 2D into the someone full of infinite dimensions? This process for me is sacred in so many ways, and why I continue to show up at the easel. And it is my hope that this blessing of discovery for me is also one for whoever comes to see.
