Read the artist’s story

This current body of work in soft pastels grew out of a move at the start of 2020, from California to North Carolina. Following a decade of intense work in coiled pine needle basketry, I was in the process of unwinding from a long career in nursing .

Landing here in Chapel hill I was overwhelmed by the lush landscape and quickly began searching for a medium to describe it. In November of 2020 I bought my first pastel set and sanded papers and fell in love. Over time I have developed a mostly representational approach to earth and sky, reflections in water, and massive storm clouds, though at times I may use non-traditional techniques to achieve my goal. I am always seeking to understand the complex relationships between color, light, composition, and the emotions they evoke.

My parents encouraged me in the arts from early childhood, recognizing my passion. However, despite the desire to be an artist, I followed my second passion to become a nurse. While working and raising my family I obtained a BFA from UC Davis in California. I had the honor of working under many talented artists who taught me not only the mechanics of drawing, printing, painting, and photography, but also how to open my eyes and see the world around me in color, abstract shapes, shadows and light. I have carried those lessons forward in this work.

Soft pastel on Lux Archival sanded paper using lightfast pastels; I used a photo as reference for initial drawing, then blocked in larger shapes and values with a wash as underpainting, followed by several layers of soft pastel. At times I scratched back some of the color to reveal the colors underneath and create additional texture, then I came back in with soft pastel.
Soft Pastel on cream-toned Lux Archival sanded paper. I used hard pastel and an alcohol wash for the underpainting after the initial rough sketch. Terry Ludwig, Blue Earth are my favorite pastels for their intensity, softness, blendability and lightfastness and I used them primarily here. I really wanted to capture that awesome light across the water.
Soft pastel on rust-toned sanded Pastel Premium paper; value underpainting in Quinacridone pinks; Followed by several layers of soft pastel. I use several different brands of pastel but my favorites are Blue Earth, Terry Ludwig, and Sennelier. This was my first attempt at snow and I’m pleased I was able to capture it in a marsh .
Soft pastel on Lux Archival sanded paper using lightfast pastels; I made a sketch from my reference photo for the initial drawing, then blocked in larger shapes and values in this case with pan pastels for the underpainting, followed by several layers of soft pastel. At times I scratched back the top color to create additional texture, then came back in with soft pastel.
