Not believing that I had a smidgen of talent for the visual arts I never painted anything for the first sixty-five years of my life. But, at sixty-six I painted my first work and totally fell in love. In the ensuing few years I have painted well over 100 paintings. I consider myself an abstract expressionist and love finding new ways to evoke emotion. I work primarily in acrylics, trying a wide array of different mediums for texture. I am obsessed with color and the way variations connect and blend.
I’m intrigued by the works of Wassily Kandinsky — his vibrant use of color and his evolution as an artist over time. I’m also fascinated with the works of Sonia Delaunay, Helen Frankenthaller, Juan Gris, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock.
I feel a kind of mindfulness when creating my art in solitude and silence. I find the process a total release I love the freedom that comes with painting unlike other forms of art that I studied at university (drama, filmmaking, writing).
Ralph Waldo Emerson, the great American poet and essayist wrote: “Do the thing and you’ll have the power”. I would love to convey, especially to young people the truth of this maxim. Nothing happens until you act. Be bold and create. You may be surprised at the talent wrapped within!
