Beginning in second grade, William Moore made a clay lion. He immediately realized that if he drew a picture, he could make it better out of clay. And so it began– digging clay up in the back yard and “cooking” it in the household oven. He started taking lots of summer classes, riding his bike to get his hands on more clay.
“I studied in college as an art major in functional pottery. Tea pots were my thesis. ‘Hot drinks’ was the name of it. I made a piece called The Last Great American Breakfast with a table out of plywood, doily fabric, an American flag. It depicted a giant cigarette of clay that lead to a huge coffee cup with a giant handle at its end.”
Today, his sculptural work is in marble, ceramic, stone, wood, and bronze. “I invite nature to take its course. I start surface developing and then allow the material to takes its own form. I follow where it leads me and surprises me.”
Shown nationally and internationally, William Moore’s work graces private and public collections with classic elegance and enduring permanence. Works placed in the Triangle Region of North Carolina include Duke University Chapel, Progress Energy corporate headquarters, SAS Corporation, Glaxco Wellcome, the City of Cary, NC and numerous Churches and Synagogues.
